Sprint Waste Driver of the Year Rewarded with New Truck

Sprint Waste Service’s reigning Driver of the Year Orlando Olivares received the latest benefit of being named the company’s top driver: a brand-new truck to drive with his award designation on the driver’s door!

Olivares was named 2017 Driver of the Year in December from among an impressive group of finalists, each named the best driver at his or her branch office. “Orlando is a true professional and a well-respected employee who’s been a key contributor in boosting our safety culture and driver morale for the Westside [branch],” said Simon Cordova, Sprint Waste vice president of operations. “His dedication to the company along with his daily safety practices are why he was chosen as our 2017 Driver of the Year.”

Olivares, who has worked for Sprint Waste Services since its inception in April 2006, said he is grateful for the recognition and enjoys being a part of the Sprint team. “We are family at Sprint,” he said. “I feel appreciated here. Sprint people love me. I could work at a waste company closer to my house and probably for more money, but it’s more than money. Being Driver of the Year is an honor, a privilege. To be chosen from something like 300 drivers … I didn’t expect that.”

In addition to a cash bonus, Olivares received the opportunity to travel with the management team to WasteExpo 2018 (this year in Las Vegas) to increase his industry knowledge, along with the special recognition on a brand-new truck to reinforce the achievement for years to come. Dave Nelson, Sprint Waste president, said the leadership team wanted the rewards of the award to match the company’s strong emphasis on safety and profound appreciation for the important contributions these top drivers make on a daily basis.

“While officially recognizing and celebrating a Driver of the Year are relatively new for our company, laser focus on fleet safety isn’t,” Nelson said. “With more than 350 vehicles on the road across the Gulf Coast each day, driver excellence and leadership are at the core of our safety culture. Our Driver of the Year sets the highest possible bar for our fleet, so we wanted to ensure the recognition was meaningful and long lasting.”

The 2018 winner will be chosen later this year and announced at the company’s year-end holiday party.
