It's Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, a reminder to us all that the Earth is worth protecting and saving. The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970, and is generally considered the birth of the global environmental movement. But as a waste services company, we know preserving and protecting the environment is an everyday responsibility.

Here, five ways to make a difference at your workplace:

1. Use less paper. Did you know the average American office worker uses 10,000 sheets of paper each year? That’s approximately 30 pages a day, so any efforts to reduce can make a real difference.

2. Use more efficient lighting. If you haven’t already done so, consider changing to commercial LED lighting. This LED Bulb Saving Calculator <http://www.ledwaves.com/pages/led-calc> can show how much you can save by making the switch.

3. Benchmark your company’s energy consumption. Do you know where your company stands now with its environmental efforts? Many third-party service providers offer benchmarking services, or check out EnergyStar’s Benchmarking Starter Kit <http://www.energystar.gov/buildings/facility-owners-and-managers/existing-buildings/use-portfolio-manager/get-started-benchmarking>.

4. Encourage carpooling and other energy-saving transportation practices. As a large waste hauler, reducing energy costs for our large fleet of trucks and equipment is just good business. But even small changes make a big difference, such as carpooling, ridesharing, no-idling policies, and prompt tire and equipment maintenance.

5. Take the Earth Day pledge, which helps us all focus on eliminating waste for a day—and remaining more aware of reducing, reusing and recycling all year long. Learn more here <http://earth911.com/earth-day-pledge-2016/>.
