Going Above and Beyond to Support the Military

Sprint Waste Services has received the Above and Beyond Award from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). U.S. Army Major Rory Escalante, operations manager at the company’s Freeport branch, nominated Sprint Waste for the award.

The Above and Beyond Award recognizes employers who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act by providing their Guard and Reserve employees additional, nonmandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits. The award is given in limited numbers by ESGR State Committees to employers who have had at least one of their supervisors/managers recognized with a Patriot Award, and who have signed or agree to sign an ESGR Statement of Support

Sprint Waste’s Joe Swinbank, Will Swinbank and Reagan Swinbank, co-owners and partners, and Dave Nelson, president, all received ESGR’s Patriot Award earlier this month. ESGR employer awards are generally progressive in nature, most building on the previous award. Recognizing supportive employers is vital to ESGR's mission of developing and promoting supportive work environments for Reserve and Guard service members through outreach, recognition and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. The organization’s awards program is a key element in furthering employer support, while strengthening relationships between service members and employers. These Department of Defense awards acknowledge and honor the sacrifices made by so many employers year after year.

Escalante said he nominated Sprint Waste because he knows the support and encouragement he receives at Sprint are rare, and he wanted the company to be recognized. “I’m thankful to work for a company that truly goes above and beyond to support me and my family in my responsibilities as an active-duty officer,” he said. “It’s not always easy to juggle all of my Army and career responsibilities, but having the complete support of my management and my team at Sprint makes all the difference for me and my family.”

Dave Nelson, Sprint Waste’s president, said Escalante’s exceptional discipline and training as an Army officer pay dividends for the company as well as our country. “We’re so proud of Rory’s service and that of the other Guard members, Reservists and veterans on our team. We know our company wins by putting their work ethic and strong leadership abilities to work for our customers.”
